What’s The Best WordPress Comment System?

Since we’ve re launched our site a number of you have suggested features and tweaks that we should be making. @Jansa020 & AlexWhalley have been particularly helpful in suggesting things that we need to consider and we’ve incorporated a number of their ideas – thanks guys!

Two days ago Alex suggested yet another thing that we needed to take a closer look at: Our Commenting System.

I take commenting systems quite seriously because they either create a barrier to commenting or promote a platform for people to engage in the conversation.

In order to make sure we get this right I’ve made a short list of the 3 commenting systems/Wordpress plugins  and I need you to help us decide which one to use!

Disqus

disqus logo Whats The Best Wordpress Comment System?(we use this currently)

Pros:

  • It allows peeps to log in using their social profile & therefore doesn’t require you to type in your info (assuming that you’re logged into FB, Twitter etc.).
  • Reply by email. You can reply to responses on your posts/comments by email.
  • Editable comments. Once you’ve published a comment you’re still able to tweak and edit to till you’ve got your comment just perfect.
  • You can also subscribe to other people as they comment on sites

Cons:

  • At times Disqus makes it quite tough to find the site or blog of someone who’s taken time to comment – this is the only issue with logging in using social ID’s.

It Looks Like This…

Disqus Whats The Best Wordpress Comment System?

CommentLUVcommentluv logo Whats The Best Wordpress Comment System?

Pros:

Cons:

  • It doesn’t allow you to edit your comments once they’re published,
  • It doesn’t allow you to login with any other forms of social ID
  • It doesn’t have sexy rounded corners and different themes to choose from
  • It doesn’t give you a remote back-up for all your comments
  • It doesn’t let you reply by email

It Looks Like This…(an example from Alex’s blog)

Dev Comment1 Whats The Best Wordpress Comment System?

Intense Debateintense debate logo Whats The Best Wordpress Comment System?

Pros:

  • The features are almost identical to Disqus (above)- Intense Debate just has different accounts that you can login with e.g. wordpress

Cons:

  • Doesn’t look as nice as Disqus

It Looks Like This…

Intense Debate1 Whats The Best Wordpress Comment System?

For me intense debate isn’t really an option – it  just seems to be lacking a bit of X-factor. If you’re an Intense Debate fan let me know why!

Decisions Time…

So in my mind Disqus seems to offer the best range of features , but…HAVE I GOT IT ALL WRONG?

Are all the feature that Disqus offers outweighed by the one simple features of CommentLUV? Is the number one feature you’re after as a commenter the ability for people to find your blog easily?

Hey Sam, I suppose I have to comment now. But what if I don't like the comment system? Seriously though, you still using Disqus and I have to admit it is a lot more user friendly than other comment systems I have seen, and the fact that it emails you the reply is certainly an advantage that almost outweighs the lack of links.
I suppose what you lose in backlink love you gain in Disqus credibility, but as we spoke about previously, how much weight this credibility carries is debatable.
I thnk just stick with this one, now that I have whinged about it LOLm, but if not CommentLuv is the winner for sure.
Not being able to login with a social ID, phooey I say!
Nice post though Sam, always thinking outside the box you is.
And thanks for the honourable mention, it has been my pleasure to provide the feedback.

    Hi Alex

Haha – I'm glad the comment system didn't stop you from commenting this time round – tiz always great to get your input. Righto will stick with Disqus for now and see how we go. I'd love to see some stats about how many people login with their social ID when given the chance. I'd suspect it might actually be quite low…so you could be spot on with “phooey-ing” the social ID features.

Looks like your blog is charging – noticed you had your first guest blogger – good post! Thanks again for chiming in and helping us improve!

nice posts… but in today word ppl want more backlink so they spread spam , so we should use extranal blog system like disquss….

    • Anonymous

Rohit you’re so right, the almighty spam comment is one of the most annoying parts of blogging.

You get all excited about the fact that someone took the time to comment and then when you actually get around to viewing the comment it’s nothing more than a self serving back-linking piece of spam.

Thanks for Taking the time to comment.

      • http://www.rohitclub.com Rohit Club

thanks for reply…… but i also hate disquss for whats, its takes more time to load page.. now i’m working with fast loading site, and don’t want to slow it….

    hi Sam,
Yes, Disqus is nice but I found out it slows my wordpress page. :(
    How about this one? http://livefyre.com/
I would really like to try Livefyre but it is still in Beta and you only get it through invitation. hmmm
This page (8asians.com) uses it and it looks pretty good.
If you have found something similar please tell me.

    • Anonymous

      Hi Akira

Yeah Livefyre looks pretty awesome, I really like the fact that it promotes following a conversation. While it’s essentially just an RSS subscription for the comments feed iThnk the messaging is much better. It’s seems easier to get excited “following a conversation”.

I just signed up for the live beta…will be interesting to see if LiveFyre loads any faster than Disqus.

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

I just started using the Disqus and I like it. It’s simple to use and if you’re logged into Twitter it saves you a lot of time.

        • Anonymous

I agree – from an Admin and a user point of view its simple and it saves time. No complaints from me anyway.

Thanks for taking time to throw your thoughts down. Always appreciated.

default wordpress comment system is only best comment system…

  • http://www.richescorner.com Richard

I’m trying out different commenting systems as well. I like the default wordpress system, but it needs plugins to get it integrated with social media and subscriptions. Sometimes these plugins break with updates, so it can be problematic.

Disqus and Intense Debate are very similar, but it seems like Disqus integrates social media slightly better, while ID has commentluv.

Right now, I’m trying out Livefyre on my blog. It’s similar to Disqus, but I feel actually does social media slightly better and appears to encourage more comment interaction on the blog itself. No commentluv integration, but they say they are looking into it. Not as mature as the other two, but has some potential.

I’ll have to give them all some time to make a final decision.

Disqus is a neat tool. Some said disqus is selling users’ data to third party. But nonetheless, I love disqus. I also tried using commentluv on my other blog site but most of the time it’s disqus.

Sam, do you really think disqus is selling users’ data?

    • Sam

I’ve just had a bit of a look around the web. It’s tough to find anything that points to Disqus selling user data.

If you read their privacy and information use policy, you’ll see that they do use personal and non-personal info to improve their service and they do provide it to third parties in order to help progress their service. They also state that they reserve the right to change their polices – but so far no mention of data for sale.

You can view the policy here: http://docs.disqus.com/help/30

During the past 25 years, a great deal of research and theory has
addressed the development of young childrens understanding of mental
states such as knowledge, beliefs, desires, intentions, and emotions.
Although developments in childrens understanding of the mind subsequent
to early childhood has received less attention, in recent years a
growing body of research has emerged examining understanding of
psychological functioning during middle and late childhood. Combined
with the literature on adolescent epistemological development, this
research provides a broader picture of age-related changes in childrens
understanding of the mind. Guided by the goals of describing
developmental changes in childrens concepts of cognitive functioning
and identifying sources of information that contribute to learning
about cognition, Childrens Discovery of the Active Mind organizes
empirical literature concerning the development of childrens knowledge
of cognitive activities from early childhood to adolescence and
presents a conceptual framework that integrates childrens introspective
activities with social influences on development. Bringing together
theoretical and empirical work from developmental, cognitive, and
social psychology, the author argues that rather than depending upon a
single source of information, developmental progress is driven by
combinations of childrens conceptual knowledge of mental functioning,
childrens phenomenological awareness of their own cognitive activities,
    and childrens social experience.
