Too Busy To Write A Post

Too BusyThis is the anti post blog post, the sort of ironic post that explains why there is no post today.

I’ve got about 20mins before I’ve gotta go out, so I’ll try to explain as much as I can about why there is no post.

Lately I’ve been burning the candle, and pushing hard on all fronts. I’m working on an exciting project in my day job, trying hard to grow iThnk, exploring new ideas for TEDxDunedin, commenting on one blog per day and trying to help as many people as I can.

The problem with all of these projects and activities is that as much as I try to structure them into my life in a workable way whenever one project goes over time it throws everything out of whack. Not so long ago I wrote a post about my new structure to help me achieve a great work life balance - I still believe this structure will work, but I need to know where my time goes as well.

So my resolution/addition to my work-life balance plan is to start keeping track of my time to see where I’m going wrong.

I recently commented on Alex’s blog post “The Internet Marketing Jigsaw Puzzle. Why do I have too many edge pieces??” – saying that I need to use a tool to track my time. With this comment I tried to make a pact with Scott Baron (another blogger who stated he needed to track his time better). The whole idea of me trying to make a deal with Scott was that if I had someone else doing it with me I couldn’t put it off. But the time for deals has gone, I’m now taking the plunge.

I’ve downloaded Klok and I’m setting it up with all my projects. I’m going to track all of my time and get rid of the things that are needlessly time consuming!

My hunch is that emails, twitter and other activities where information just keeps on coming is going to be the largest time suck…but we shall see.

What Do uThnk?

If any of you brave souls are willing to embark on this journey with me I’d appreciate your help and feedback. If not then please at least tell me what uThnk the biggest time sucks in your life are and help me stare clear of them just a little bit faster…

    Hey Sam,
How Ironic that I am starting by apologising that it has been so long but time just got away from me.
At the moment that time is taken up with personal family issues and commitments, but generally I hear exactly what you are saying. To use the analogy that you so kindly linked to (thank you, don't know why I never got a trackback?) even when I do structure my goals, there is still so much going on and I am only one person who, as you said – has to live and work and do other things so sometimes things just fall by the wayside. Ironically (again) the blog is what is making me a somebody online, but at the same time it is stopping me from becoming a somebody online – if you know what I mean. (ooh, I like that line, think I might use it again)
Good little post with some great perspective, I like the look of that Klok tool too, it's free yeah?
Glad to see work is going well for you mate, all the best.
    Until the next post

    Hey Alex

Love the line “the blog is what is making me a somebody online, but at the same time it is stopping me from becoming a somebody online – if you know what I mean” – absolutely awesome, would love to see a post from you on this.

Hope that the family and personal commitments are positive ones and that life is going well following your big leap into the full on world of online business.

Thanks for yet another thoughtful comment.

    Oh and two more things…

    1. Totally weird how you didn't get the trackback – WP is just odd about that sorta stuff sometimes.

    2. Klok is free, although they make it bloody tough to figure that out. The $15 that they display so prominently is only for the premium version which allows you to import things like meetings from you calendar.
