I’m currently in the midst of redesigning the TEDxDunedin website. The current one was built in a hectic 24 hour period within the 6 weeks that we put first the event together – so needless to say it’s not the best and in need of a refresh.
I love slideshare, it’s great for inspiration and for seeing what some of the best speakers in the world are talking about. In my search for inspiration for the TEDxDunedin site refresh I came across this great slide deck by Jeremiah Owyang.
Nowadays most people have a share button or some sort, but if we read between the lines of Jeremiah’s presentation the message is fairly simple – “seamless integration” is optimal…but more than this the social integration needs to have a purpose. Each of the websites in the last few slides of the presentation had a reason for you to stay on site. The login and sharing features on their own are not enough.
This is a sneak preview of the drafted design for the new TEDxDunedin home page…..(click the image to view full size). This design has heavily influenced by the TEDxBratislava website
With a Twitter feed, shareable videos and the most recent blog posts all displayed on the home page this design probably falls between level 4 and level 5 – “Brand integration with social channels” -”users stay on site with aggregated social discussion”.
In addition it would have disqus and share buttons on each of the blog posts so this might bump it into the 6th level: “users stay on site with social login” -
But ultimately what level of Jeremiah’s score card this site reaches is irrelevant – what I really want to find out is: How do you want to engage with TEDxDunedin?
What Do uThnk?
This design is in its very first round of feedback, so at this stage I’d love you to give me your thoughts on look and feel as well as whether you’d like to see further social media integration? Would you like to see a forum for discussions about Dunedin? If So Would you like Facebook connect to login to this forum? Is there a purpose for this site that we haven’t thought about yet? Is there some sort of social interaction that we should be promoting like Foursquare Swarms?
I guess what I’m trying to do here is to collaboratively form the Road Map (the last slide) for the TEDxDunedin site with all of you…so please do let me know what you’d like to see.
