The Death of A Social Media Start Up: 12 Seconds

I get a lot of emails  from social networks, I’m signed up to almost all of them. But two days ago I got this email….

12secs1 The Death of A Social Media Start Up: 12 Seconds

Since first reading this it’s been etched in the back of my mind. I guess the reason it resonates with me so much is because recently we’ve come to realise that sometimes its important to say that enough is enough. But what the 12second team have done is even more impressive, yes they’ve called quits but they’ve done it with an exit strategy. Many members of the 12 Second team are behind a new niche social network called Rally Up which has been acquired by AOL. Not a bad escape plan huh….

I guess this logic is a similar to why we’re moving away from charging for generic social media workshops and education, we’ve come to realise that the information is readily available online and self-learning/community is more powerful than us preaching to an audience. This is why we’re putting together Free Collaborative Workshops – stay tuned for more on these soon.

As Sol says “everything has it’s life cycle” – so I wonder how much longer general social media education has left in it….

Are there other products that you think have run the course of their natural lifecycle?
